Mr. Ratan Tata was born on December 28, 1937, to Naval and Soonoo Tata (Also refer as Sooni Tata) during the British Raj, into a Parsi Zoroastrian family. He and his younger brother, Jimmy, were raised by their grandmother, Navajbai R. Tata, in the grand Tata Palace, a baroque manor located in downtown Mumbai.

His parents got separated when he was 10 years old. Moreover, his life was indeed luxurious traveling to school in a Rolls-Royce, but however, his late grandmother lady Navajbai always set a strong value on her grandchildren. She was considerate and tolerant yet quite strict in terms of discipline.

Mr. Tata in one of his interviews opened up that they were very much protected and they did not have many friends while growing up. He had to learn piano and played a lot of crickets. His early schooling was done in Mumbai at Campion School and John Cannon School. Subsequently, he received his degree in Architecture with structural engineering from Cornell University, U.S.A.

Those years in America between 1955 to 1962 would influence Mr. Tata Tremendously. In many ways, this was the period of making Mr. Ratan Tata. He did travel extensively the country and was charmed and mesmerized by California and that West Coast Lifestyle, he was indeed ready to settle down in Los Angeles.

However, the idea of settling in America was broken when Mr. Tata’s grandmother Lady Navajbai’s health deteriorated. He was then forced to return to India, a life where he thought he had left behind.

However, JRD Tata was not amused with this decision and told Mr. Tata that he could not be in India working for IBM and that was how Mr. Tata came to be offered a job with Tata Industries in 1962. He built his career from the ground level, worked with other companies within the Tata group, and eventually became the director of National Radio and Electronics (NELCO) in 1971.  It took him nine years to move from an apprentice to a director but he never shied away from working hard.

Later in 1991, he became the Chairman of Tata Industries and succeeded his uncle J.R.D. Tata. There were objections raised from other executives amid concern regarding his ability to manage the responsibilities. Soon after he was appointed as the Chairman of Tata Industries, he successfully improved the overall position of the organization. He did a modification of the management system and vision of the division and also managed to increase the dividends. Additionally in the same year, he was also a Prime Minister’s Council on Trade and Industry member. He was on the advisory board of the RAND for the Asia Pacific Policy.

Under the leadership of the conglomerate, Tata Group aggressively sought to expand it and increasingly focused on globalizing its business exponentially. In the year 2000, the Tata group acquired the famous London-based Tetley Tea for $431.3 million, followed by the purchase of one of the truck manufacturing operations of South Korea’s Daewoo Motors for $102 million in the year 2004.  In hindsight, 2007 marked the biggest corporate takeover by Tata Steel acquiring the giant Anglo-Dutch steel manufacturer Corus Group for $11.3 billion.

Under his stewardship, India witnessed the largest-ever acquisition by an Indian automotive firm by purchasing the elite British car brands Jaguar and Land Rover from the Ford Motor Company.

During his tenure of Chairman of Tata Sons between 1991 to 2012, the Tata group revenues soared, surpassing $100 billion in the fiscal year 2011-2012.

Launch India’s First Pet Hospital
