What is FSSAI?

FSSAI or Food Safety & Standards Authority of India is an independent statutory body that maintains food safety & standards in India. FSSAI is administrated by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 states “An Act to consolidate the laws regarding food & to establish the FSSAI for laying down science-based standards for articles of food & to regulate their storage, sale, manufacture, distribution, and import to ensure availability of sale & wholesome food for human consumption and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.

In India, FSSAI Registration and FSSAI License is necessary for any food business that stores, manufactures, distributed, or transports food. Depending on the nature & size of the Company, FSSAI License or Registration may be required. In the process of FSSAI Registration, the Food Business Operator (FBO)will get a 14 digit number that needs to be printed on food packages. Getting a FSSAI License can provide the business with legal benefits, create customer awareness, build goodwill, ensure food safety & help in business expansion.

Functions of FSSAI

  • It sets up rules & regulations which must be followed by all food manufacturing companies, keeping into consideration food safety & hygiene.

What is FSSAI Logo and FSSAI License Number ?

The FSSAI License Number and Logo are always mentioned on the label of the food package in inverse colour to the background. In case of many units, the packer or manufacturer, the FSSAI logo and license number of the brand owner must be mentioned on the label of the food package. The addresses of the various units on the label must carry the FSSAI License Number. In case of imported food products, the importer must show the FSSAI Logo & License Number with the name & address of the importer. These may be pre-printed on the label or attached by a sticker before custom clearance.

Different Types of FSSAI

  • FSSAI Basic Registration: This Registration is mandatory for petty food manufacturers or the Food Business Operators having an annual turnover of less than Rs. 12 lakhs unless the FBO is covered under compulsory licensing.
  • FSSAI State License: Medium size manufacturers, marketers, transporters, processors, or traders require the FSSAI State License from the State Government. The Food Business Operator has an annual turnover of more than Rs. 12 lakh but not exceeding Rs. 20 crore is considered a medium-sized Food Business Operator and must obtain a FSSAI State License.
  • FSSAI Central License: A large-sized business transporting, manufacturing, processing & having international trade of food products must get the FSSAI Central License. The Food Business Operator having an annual turnover of more than Rs. 20 crore is considered a big business & must get an FSSAI Central License.

There are 3 different types of FSSAI License in India: Basic FSSAI Registration, State License, and Central License.

It is valid for one year or five years depending on the fee paid to the Government.

From 2021, the FSSAI has mandated all FBOs to mention the FSSAI Number on invoices & bills.

After 3 months from the cancellation date, the FBO may make a new application for License to the concerned authority if all observations made in the improvement notice have been complied with.
