Since the Indian economy is rapidly growing and contributing to global trade, the minister urged the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) to focus mainly on quality. The minister said the BIS has a huge role in increasing economic growth, including enhancing the ‘Made in India’ label and establishing the Brand Bharat globally. The minister stated that over 22,300 standards are in force today, and 94% of Indian standards are being harmonized with the International Organization for Standardization (ISE) standards.
On 14th October, 2024, The Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food, Public Distribution, and New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, underlined the essential need to deliver top-quality products and services to the citizens as the nation aims to become the world’s third-largest economy.
The National Institute of Training for Standardization in Noida hosted the event on World Standards Day.
“The well-being of the consumers depends primarily on their access to high-grade products, along with the growth and profitability of the industry. It is associated with the demand for high-quality goods,” said the Union Minister.
Enhancing the ‘Made in India’ Label
The Union Minister said this holistic approach, acknowledging the interdependence of consumers and producers, fosters a robust quality ecosystem. Union Minister Shri Joshi emphasized PM Narendra Modi’s vision for the country to be recognized for the best quality and for India to work hard to make itself synonymous with world standards.
He stressed that the BIS has a crucial role in increasing the country’s economic growth, along with the ‘Made in India’ label and Brand Bharat at a global level. He said that under the guidance of the honourable Prime Minister, the new BIS Act of 2016 will further improve the ease of doing business and boost the ‘Make in India’ campaign.

Shri Joshi said raising public awareness about standards is necessary while empowering consumers. He said the government’s challenge is to generate widespread interest and awareness among citizens in the standards programmes that BIS is undertaking.

It also facilitates lodging complaints regarding substandard products and misuse of the BIS Standard Mark.
The upgraded brand-new BIS Care App to version 3.0 has a new set of features specifically designed to increase the visibility of relevant information related to Standards and Certification for stakeholders.
Also, the minister launched a film on BIS’s Standards promotion Activities along with a Quality Quest Game to help consumers improve their knowledge of quality. To mark this World Standards Day, he released Reference Handbooks to spread information regarding the essential national standards and developed comic books by BIS, distributed to Standards Clubs across the country.
