Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) is a comprehensive wastewater management or wastewater treatment strategy aimed at eliminating all liquid waste discharge from industrial processes. This approach focuses on removing or extracting liquid waste from industrial activities, allowing for its recovery and water reuse within the facility. The goal of ZLD is to ensure that no industrial wastewater is released into the environment, thereby minimizing environmental impact.
To achieve this, industries employ advanced industrial water treatment technologies that help in water recycling and purify wastewater for reuse. Although the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) does not mandate specific technologies for ZLD, conventional methods like evaporators, multi-effect distillation, mechanical vapour compression, and crystallization are commonly used.
These technologies facilitate the recovery of water from wastewater, which can then be reuse in industrial processes, effectively converting the wastewater into a manageable residue form. By implementing ZLD, industries can conserve water resources, comply with environmental compliance, ZLD standards, ZLD regulations, and enhance industrial sustainability practices.
In India, the Central Government has introduced a scheme that offers financial assistance to project proponents for enhancing their ethanol distillation capacity or setting up distilleries to produce 1st Generation (1G) ethanol from feedstocks like cereals (rice, wheat, barley, corn, and sorghum), sugarcane, and sugar beet. However, this assistance is available only if the entities or entrepreneurs involved in such businesses have obtained a Zero Liquid Discharge certificate i.e., ZLD certificate.
The ZLD certificate is verified by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and certifies that the business has achieved zero liquid discharge through the standard method or wastewater recycling treatment proposed at the time of applying to the Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD) for this purpose. Subsequently it plays a major part of Industrial effluent management.

Document Submission
Firstly, the sugar/ distillery must submit the mandatory documents as per Annexure-A of SOP to CPCB.
