Department of Legal Metrology Karnataka was formerly known as the Department of Weights and Measures. In order to align with the guidelines of the International Organisation of Legal Metrology, for which India is also a member, it was renamed as Department of Legal Metrology.

To achieve the said objectives, the Department of Legal Metrology of the state of Karnataka is enforcing and implementing the following Legislations:

• The Legal Metrology (National Standard) Rules, 2011
• The Legal Metrology (Numeration) Rules, 2011
• The Legal Metrology (Approval of Models) Rules, 2011
• The Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011
• The Karnataka Legal Metrology (Enforcement) Rules, 2011
• The Indian Institute of Legal Metrology Rules, 2011

Eligibility criteria to get registered under Legal Metrology Karnataka

An applicant who is eligible for getting Registration from the Department of Legal Metrology of the state of Karnataka must fulfil the following criteria:

• Citizen of India
• 18 years or above
• An individual or company registered under Government Act
• Two years’ experience
• Required Education
• Proof of financial status

For Repairer:

• Ownership Deed and Tax Receipt if the applicant owns the premises
• Rental agreement and NOC Certificate from the owner of the building if the applicant has rented the premises
• Educational Qualification Certificate of Applicant
• Specimen Signatures of Applicant
• Verification Certificate of Laon Articles and Test Equipment Tools List
• List of Test Equipment Tools
• Loan Articles
• Partnership deed (if operating as a Partnership)
• Memorandum of Association or Articles of Association

Procedure for obtaining Registration under Legal Metrology Karnataka

Followings are the steps required to be followed by the applicant to obtain Registration from the Department of Legal Metrology of Karnataka:

• Applicant files application with all required Documents in the prescribed form for manufacturer, dealer or repairer, respectively
• Applicants submit the application to the receiving authority with the requisite fee.
• The department conducts the inspection and verification process on a scheduled date.
• Premises are inspected, and the concerned Legal Metrology Officer verifies necessary papers.
• Such a Legal Metrology Officer collects security deposits.
• The application with the inspection and verification report is submitted to the issuing authority or the controller of Legal Metrology Karnataka.
• Based on such reports, the Registration process is completed and issuing authority issues the Registration Certificate in favour of the applicant.

The above-obtained Registration Certificate is valid for only one year, and applicants have to renew it every year in November.
