Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (Meity) has notified “Electronics & Information Techn0logy Products (Requirement for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2012” on October 03, 2012, after that Meity has been added many goods under the CRS Scheme. No one is permitted, per the Orders, to produce, store for sale, import, sell, or distribute products or goods that do not meet the Indian standard stipulated in the Order and do not bear the Standard Mark with a specific registration number received from BIS. Several goods were identified through the Compulsory Registration Scheme, and it was mandated that these products undergo in-country testing at BIS-accredited laboratories in India. All of the registered products under this programme will undertake safety testing in accordance with Indian norms and IEC standards[1]. What is the meaning of CRS?
Compulsory Registration Scheme also known as CRS, which is introduced by the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology for IT and Electronics products. Currently, there are 77 electronics products under CRS Scheme. All the individuals & businesses who are manufacturing, importing, storing, selling, or distributing electronics products under the product list need to apply for BIS CRS Registration. Any individuals or businesses who are the manufacturers of electronic products need to apply for this registration after getting their product tested by the BIS approved laboratory. Then, BIS registers the manufacturers under BIS CRS Registration scheme who are allowed to declare that their products conform to the Indian Standards. Once the entity is successfully registered, they are permitted to use the standard mark as informed by the BIS CRS Registration for UPS and Inverter is allotted to the applicant.
An Overview of UPS and Inverter
UPS is the device that supplies energy to load in case of a power failure, like an inverter. A low capacity UPS with a capacity up to 1.5 KVA has an inbuilt battery of about 5 Ah to 10 Ah, which provides 15-30 minutes of power backup during a power outage. High capacity systems have batteries external to the UPS, but functioning depends on UPS type. All UPS and Inverters of Rating up to 5KVA has been included in the mandatory BIS / CRS Registration Scheme under IS standard – IS 16242 (P-1). This product cannot be exported/imported or sold in Indian consumer market without BIS Registration.

- MSME/SSI certificate, if applicable

Procedure to Obtain BIS CRS Registration for UPS and Inverter
The process for getting BIS CRS Registration for UPS and Inverter is divided into two part are following:
- Procedure for Indian Manufacturer
Step 1: Submit the online application along with all vital documents and pay the prescribed fee of licensing.
Step 2: Product sample testing by BIS authorized lab.
Step 3: Submit the application’s offline or online copy, including the product sample test report.
Step 4: BIS officers verify the application and documents.
Step 5: grant the BIS License.
- Procedure for Foreign Manufacturer
Step 1: Nominate AIR which can represent a foreign manufacturer.
Step 2: Submit an online application and all vital documents and pay the fee for the BIS license.
Step 3: Get the product sample tested by the BIS-approved laboratory.
Step 4: Submit the application’s offline or online copy, including the product test report.
Step 5: BIS officers verify the application and documents.
Step 6: grant the BIS License.
Note: BIS CRS Registration for UPS and Inverter Certificate is valid for two year and it can be further renew in case there is no change in the product and its standard.
