Indian industrial products have carried the ISI mark since 1955 as a sign of their adherence to national standards. Products bearing this mark are guaranteed to be in compliance with an Indian Standard (IS) created by India’s Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Throughout the Indian subcontinent, people know and trust the ISI mark as the gold standard for certification. The national standards body known as the Bureau of Indian Standards was formerly known as the Indian Standards Institution, or ISI for short. This name change took effect on January 1, 1987. Some products that are sold in India must have the ISI mark. This includes many electrical appliances like Cement, Household Electrical Goods, Food and Related Products, Diesel Engines, Oil Pressure Stove, Automobile Accessories, Cylinder accessories, Medical equipment, Steel Products, and Electric Transformers, etc. ISI marks are not required on most other products. In this blog, we are going to discuss some vital documents required for ISI Certification.

Importance of ISI mark certification

Registration of the ISI mark is required for all certifying goods sold in the country. The mark is intended to improve product quality and safety. ISI-certified products indicate that they meet Indian quality standards. You can expand your business by obtaining ISI certification for your products. If goods sold in India do not have ISI, they cannot be marketed within India’s borders. However, there is a list of a few documents required for ISI certification, which needs to be duly submitted, in order to get an ISI License for the product.

The government of India, and the Bureau of Indian Standards, require ISI on some products sold in India. These products include both electrical appliances and industrial items. However, beginning in September 2012, ISI is required for certified steel items.

Vital Documents Required for ISI Certification

The list of Documents Required for ISI Certification are as under:

  • Certification of Incorporation (CoI) of the company
  • Receipt of Property tax
  • Insurance policy
  • In case the property is rented, then submit the rent agreement
  • Telephone bill
  • Electricity bill
  • or Bank statement
  • Aadhar card of the company’s director;
  • Voter ID card;
  • Driving License (DL);

Following are some essential documents required for ISI Certification in India for Foreign Manufacturer:

Specific Documents Required for ISI Certification to be submitted by Foreign Manufacturers

Here are some more specific Documents Required for ISI Certification for foreign manufacturers whose factories are located outside of India:

  • Application & other required documents must be submitted in duplicate.
  • According to FMCS standards[1], all foreign manufacturers are classified as “Large Scale.”
  • The applicant must appoint an Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) for its BIS licence operations. The applicant must verify the following before nominating an AIR:
    • AIR must be an Indian citizen.
    • Under BIS Conformity Assessment schemes, the AIR nominated represents only one manufacturing company and does not represent any other foreign manufacturer(s). However, the restriction shall not apply to foreign manufacturers belonging to one group of companies and importers (related to the foreign manufacturer) nominated as AIR.
    • AIR shall not have any conflicts of interest relating to their capacity as AIR with respect to testing the sample(s) in independent laboratories.
    • The AIR should have at least a bachelor’s degree and be able to understand the BIS Act, 2016 and the rules & regulations made under it, as well as what they mean.
    • AIR must certify that they agree to be held accountable for the BIS Act, Rules, Regulations, and Terms & Conditions as stated in BIS Licences, Agreements, Undertakings, etc. executed by or on behalf of the foreign manufacturer in connection with the granting and use of Licenses.
    • The name AIR is mentioned in the licence document.
  • The applicant must confirm readiness for the inspection and must take all actions, such as arranging for a translator, purchasing airline tickets, obtaining a VISA and insurance, arranging for transportation in the foreign country, and so on, for the officer(s), so that the visit can take place as soon as possible.
  • The manufacturer firm is responsible for the timely and safe delivery of sample(s) to labs as well as the reimbursement of testing fees.
  • Fees and charges – All payments must be made in USD equivalent by non-SAARC applicants. South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, the Maldives, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka) can make payments in either Indian rupees with GST (as applicable) or equivalent USD.
  • Agreement and indemnity bond needs to be signed.
  • After the licence is granted, a Performance Bank Guarantee (PBG) of USD 10,000 from any bank with an RBI-approved branch in India is required. The validity of the Performance Bank Guarantee (PBG) shall be six months longer than the validity of the licence.

How to get Indian ISI Certification?

In order to certify the product with the ISI mark, the manufacturer(s) must complete the testing and submit the documents required for ISI Certification by BIS. The factory will also be physically audited by a BIS officer.
