A domestic gas stove is a stove that is fueled by combustible gas like LPG gas, propane, butane, syngas, butane or other flammable gas. It was first introduced in the 1820s & a gas stove factory was established in 19836 in England. This new cooking technology had the benefit of being easily adjustable & could be turned off when not in use. The domestic gas stove is covered under IS 4246:2002 and this Standard covers the operation, construction, safety requirements and tests for household gas stoves with metallic bodies designed for use with Liquefied Petroleum Gases (LPG). The gas stove must be constructed & designed as per the Standard. So, any manufacturer who wants to manufacture domestic gas stoves in India is required to obtain BIS ISI Certification for Domestic Gas Stoves because this Certification ensures that the product is of good quality and safe to use. What is the Meaning of ISI?

ISI stands for Indian Standards Institute, which has been established to maintain the integrity & knowledge about the nature of industrial items or products. It is a certified mark that confirms that the industrial & consumer products are of good quality and are safe to use. It’s a recognised Certification mark that verifies the quality of a product in India. In India, ISI comes with 2 different schemes of Registration, i.e., Mandatory Registration and Voluntary Registration.

The ISI Mark is essential for the Certification of products for sale in India and is mandatory to obtain. To be eligible for ISI Certification, the BIS criteria should be duly met by the requisite manufacturing company. According to the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018[1], the product or good is subject to a fetching Certificate to be able to provide assurance to the customer or 3rd party regarding the quality, safety & reliability of the product.

Importance of BIS ISI Certification

Following is the importance of BIS ISI Certification:

  1. ISI mark promotes safety, reliability, and standardisation of the products;
  2. This mark minimises product rejections, thereby stabilising the revenue stream for the business;
  3. An ISI-certified product assures sustained service life & improved performance over generic counterparts;
  4. An ISI-certified product or item assures peace of mind for end-users as far as quality is concerned;
  5. Most ISI-certified products affirm guaranteed replacement if a product or item fails in any condition.

Various Tests Required for Domestic Gas Stove

The following tests shall be carried out for Domestic Gas Stove:

  • Type of Tests:
  1. Gas consumption;
  2. Combustion test;
  3. Thermal efficiency;
  4. Resistance to drought;
  5. Floor, ceiling, wall & surface temperature;
  6. Flashback test for materials of burners;
  7. Strength test;
  8. Fire hazard & limiting temperature.
  • Routine Tests:
  1. Noise Control;
  2. Flashback;
  3. Flame travel & ignition;
  4. Gas soundness;
  5. Flame stability;
  6. Formation of soot.

Vital Documents Required for BIS ISI Certification for Domestic Gas Stove

Following are some crucial documents required for BIS ISI Certification for Domestic Gas Stoves:

  1. A copy of the Business Registration Certificate;
  2. Details of testing equipment;
  3. Proof of Indian Residency;
  4. Layout plan of the factory;
  5. Packaging details such as quantity, storage facility, size, etc.;
  6. Copy of a Trademark Registration Certificate;
  7. Registration address of the production unit;
  8. All details regarding the machines installed in the premise;
  9. Disposal protocol of the waste product;
  10. Details of raw material and the sourcing address;
  11. Copy of electricity bills or water tax receipt;
  12. Details regarding the staff serving the quality department.

Procedure for BIS ISI Certification for Domestic Gas Stoves

Following is the step-by-step procedure for BIS ISI Certification for Domestic Gas Stoves:

Step 1: Testing of Product: The product (Domestic Gas Stoves) for which the ISI License is required should be tested in any BIS-certified lab as per the Indian Standards (IS). The request for a test must be generated from the MANAK portal to any BIS-certified lab for the designated Standard.

The lab performed all the tests in accordance with the testing parameters mentioned under the IS and generated the test report. The same reports are uploaded by the certified BIS lab on the online portal, using which the applicant or the manufacturer files the application for Registration.

Step 2: Filing of the Application: Once the lab submits the test reports, the applicant can file the application form as per the test report generated. It is compulsory to upload all the vital documents along with the details asked in the application. Once the applicant fills up all the details and uploads all the vital documents, then the applicant is required to pay the requisite fees to the Department to submit the file.

Step 3: Inspection: After submitting the application and documents, the BIS Officials will verify all the documents, details, and applications submitted by the applicant to the BIS. The authenticity of the submitted test report is checked along with the test results. If the Department want any additional documents, then the same should be provided before the allotted inspection dates. Once all the documents & details satisfy the inspecting officer, then a factory inspection will be conducted by the inspection officer where all the crucial documents are verified in hardcopy & the testing & manufacturing procedure is verified.

Step 4: Issuance of License: After the factory inspection, the inspection officer submits the inspection or examination report to the Certification Officer will all the remarks. After that, they will issue the License to the manufacturer.

Penalty for Misusing the ISI Mark

BIS proposed strict penalties for misusing ISI Mark, such as logo imitation & product duplicity. As per the norms, anyone found guilty of such misconduct will have to pay Rs. 50,000/- and imprisonment for one year. BIS has constituted an enforcement department to monitor the illicit uses of ISI Mark.

The ISI Mark is applied on Domestic Gas Stoves and Labelling & marking shall be carried out as per IS 4246:2002. The manufacturer of the gas stove must obtain a BIS ISI Certification for Domestic Gas Stove from the BIS to use an ISI Mark. The BIS issues a License based on a successful assessment of quality control, testing capabilities, manufacturing infrastructure & production process.
