What is a GSTR 3B Return?

It is a monthly self-declaration that is filed by a registered dealer. It is a streamline summary return of inward and outward supplies. The main motive of the return is for taxpayers to declare their summary GST liabilities for the tax period and the discharge of these liabilities at a specific time period.

About filing the GSTR-3B Returns in a Staggered Manner

Every individual who has registered for GST must file their GSTR-3B, including Nil returns. By looking at the difficulties faced by trade and industry in the filing of returns, the government has decided to introduce several measures to make the process much easier.

Note:The Finance Ministry has declared that- “now GST taxpayers can file their GSTR-3B returns in a staggered manner.”

Currently, the last date for filing GSTR-3B returns for every taxpayer is the 20th of every month. But from now onward, the last date for filing of GSTR-3B for the taxpayers having annual turnover of Rs 5 crore and above in the previous financial year would be 20th of the month. As a result, around 8 lakh regular taxpayers would have the last date of GSTR-3B filing as the 20th of every month without late fees.

The taxpayers having the annual turnover below Rs 5 crore in the previous financial year will be divided further into two categories. The government further said it has also taken into consideration the difficulties and concerns expressed by the taxpayers regarding the filing of GSTR-3B and other returns.

Moreover, in order to improve the performance of the GSTN filing portal[1] permanently, multiple technological measures are being introduced in collaboration with Infosys and will be implemented by April 2020.
