Section 24 of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 states the measures mandatorily to be taken for the purpose of Stamping and Verification of all Weights and Measures in India. The Section states that anyone having the possession, control, or custody of any weights and measures with the intention to utilise the weights and measures for any transitions or for the purpose of protection against any occurrence of fraudulent activities needs to be mandatorily be verified on behalf of the Controller in the specific order along with payment of the applicable fees as required by the purpose of Verification, Stamping and Re–Stamping from State Board.
On 11th April 2014, the Legal Metrology Division, which falls under the authorisation of the Department of Consumer Affairs, issued a notification for the Controller of the Legal Metrology of all the respective States and Union Territories of India that states all Weights and Measures need to be mandatorily verified and stamped if they are to be utilised for any transaction purposes or protection purposes that is to be in accordance with Section 24 (1) of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009.
The responsibility of the Controller of the Legal Metrology Department of each applicable State or Union Territory is to direct and advise the Enforcement Officers or Inspectors that conduct procedures of Verification and Stamping of Weights and Measurement Instruments that are to be utilised for “Transaction” and “Protection” which is defined under Section 2 (u) and Section 2 (k) of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009.
The following pointers mentioned below are essential to be followed for the purpose of the Verification procedure of Stamping and Re–Stamping of weights and measures from the State Board –
For the purpose of maintenance of Calibration of Stamping and Re–Stamping of weights and measures from the State Board for Verification purposes, all types of operations in relation to the usage of weights and measurement instruments that is utilised for determination of value and errors of the applicable weights and measurement instruments is mandated. The Verification, along with Stamping, the Vehicle Tank’s Capacity or the Compartment or any other Instrument which is known as Calibration, is utilised for the purpose of determination of all the required Legal Metrological factors for Stamping and Re–Stamping of weights and measures from the State Board.
Calibration also includes the fixation of actual Gauge Markings and Scale Markings on instruments for the purpose of issuance of the permit for the usage of weights and measurement instruments.
The following mentioned below states the validity for Stamping of weights and measures from the State Board of various types of weights and measurement instruments that needs to be Re-Stamped upon expiration date –
The Stamping of Weights and Measurement Instruments is authorised by the District Office, which falls under the Legal Metrology Department. All instruments of weights and measures are to be checked for maintenance of accuracy, and upon receiving the submission of the applicable governmental fees by the applicant, the authorised Inspector of the Legal Metrology applies the required Stamping and issues the Verification Certificate. The applicable fees are required to be submitted regularly to the Government’s Treasury.

Until the Verification procedure for Stamping and Re–Stamping of weights and measures from the State Board is completed successfully, the applicable weight and measurement instrument on the premises cannot be changed, not the instruments could be moved.
The Verification, along with Stamping, the Vehicle Tank’s Capacity or the Compartment or any other Instrument which is known as Calibration, is utilised for the purpose of determination of all the required Legal Metrological factors for Stamping and Re–Stamping of weights and measures from the State Board.
