The decision has come due to curfews and lockdowns because of the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic. Other tax-related deadlines were also extended. These include extension of <em>PAN-Aadhaar linking <\/em>deadline to <em>June 30, 2020<\/em>, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/corpbiz.io\/learning\/vivad-se-vishwas-scheme\/\"><strong>Vivad se Vishwaas scheme<\/strong><\/a><\/em> without paying any interest and penalty to <em>June 30, 2020<\/em>, and completing tax-saving for FY 2019-20<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why the deadline extensions were needed<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Deadline for belated ITR:<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;\nIf the deadline for belated ITR was not extended for FY 2018-19, then\ntaxpayers would have lost the opportunity to file their tax return unless\nincome tax department specifically would have asked them to. According to the\nIncome Tax Department, <strong><em>the willful failure of filing ITR can lead\nto prosecution<\/em><\/strong> and levy of fines under the Income-tax Act, 1961. Hence,\nthis <strong><em>extension\nhas come as relief<\/em><\/strong> for those individuals who are yet to file their tax\nreturns and could not do so because of lockdown and curfews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Penalty for belated ITR filing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Individuals, while filing belated ITR, will be required to\npay late filing fees. According to the Income-tax Act, 1961, <strong>late filing fees of Rs 10,000<\/strong> will be\nlevied if the ITR is filed from 31March\n2020 to 30 June 2020. However, if the total income <strong><em>does not exceed Rs 5 lakh<\/em><\/strong>,\nthen a maximum <strong>late filing fee of Rs\n1,000<\/strong> will be levied. However, in case of revised return, no such penalty\nwill be levied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An individual can also be prosecuted under <strong>section 276CC<\/strong> of the Act with\nimprisonment and fine for willful failure or default in filing the income tax\nreturn. If any unreported income is later discovered by the Income Tax\nDepartment, then a <strong>penalty of 50 percent\nto 200 percent<\/strong> for under-reporting or misreporting of income will be\nleviable on you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Methods_of_ITR_e-verification\"><\/span>Methods of ITR e-verification<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the ITR is uploaded on the e-filing website, you get 120 days to e-verify the return. The methods of verification include both electronic and physical modes. There are six electronic methods to e-verify your<a href=\"https:\/\/corpbiz.io\/income-tax-return-filing\"><strong> income tax return filing<\/strong><\/a>. The steps involved in this verification are as follows:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>At first, you need to visit the e-filing web portal<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then you need to link your Aadhar Card with PAN details in case it is not linked. Also, the mobile number must be linked to your Aadhar number and registered with the same number in the<strong> UIDAI database<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On the e-filing web portal, go to \u201cMy Account\u201d page and click on e-verify return. An SMS with six digits OTP (One Time password) will be sent to your registered mobile number).&nbsp; This OTP is valid only for 30 minutes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At last, you have to enter the received OTP on the e-filing portal, and your income tax return filing will be verified.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-left\"><b>Read our article<\/b>:<mark style=\"background: #fffd03 !important;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/corpbiz.io\/learning\/online-income-tax-slab-and-rate-for-financial-year-2020-21\/\">Income Tax Slab and Rate for financial year 2020-21<\/a><\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Electronic_Verification_via_Net_banking\"><\/span>Electronic Verification via Net banking<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>You can also verify your income tax return via Net Banking if you have availed the Net Banking facility of your bank account. One must remember that only select banks allow you to e-verify your ITR. The steps involved in this verification are as follows:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Firstly, log in to your Bank Account on the\nbank&#8217;s website. After this, select the e-verify option under the\n&#8220;TAX&#8221; tab, and clicking on this option will redirect to the e-filing\nwebsite of the income tax department. Also, your PAN must be registered with\nthe bank.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Now, login to your bank account on the bank\u2019s\nwebsite and select the e-verify option under the \u201cTax\u201d tab. This will redirect\nyou to the e-filing website of the income tax department.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After this, you need to click on the \u201cMy\nAccount\u201d tab and select the \u201cGenerate EVC\u201d option. A code will be sent to your\nregistered email address and mobile number, which is valid for 72 hours.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Now, click on the e-verify option under the\n&#8220;My Account&#8221; tab to verify the return. An option saying &#8220;I have\nEVC already&#8221; will pop up. Select this option, and after this, click on\n&#8220;Submit.&#8221; Your ITR will be verified.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Electronic_Verification_via_Bank_Account\"><\/span>Electronic Verification via Bank Account<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>The income tax department allows you to e-verify your return using your bank account. This facility is available for select banks, which are mentioned above in the EVC via Net Banking. The steps involved in this verification are as follows:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>To e-verify your Income Tax return filing using\nyour bank account, you have to pre-validate it.&nbsp;\nAfter that, enter the required details such as your bank&#8217;s name, account\nnumber, IFSC Code, and mobile number.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If your PAN details and name match with the bank\naccount records, then your pre-validation is successful.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After this, select &#8220;Generate EVC&#8221;\noption under the &#8220;My Account tab.&#8221; A code will be generated and will\nbe sent on your mobile number.&nbsp; In\n&#8220;My Account&#8221; tab, select the &#8220;e-verify&#8221; section and enter\nthe code.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note: In case if you want to change your registered mobile number or registered email address, then you need to visit the bank branch for the same, and you cannot do so without permission from the bank.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Verifying_tax-returns_through_Demat_account\"><\/span>Verifying tax-returns through Demat account<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>You can also verify your ITR filing through your Demat account if you\nare a Demat Account holder. You need to pre-validate your Demat account to\nverify your tax return. The steps involved in this verification are as follows:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The pre-validation process is automatic and\nusually takes about 1-2 hours. You can use your Demat account to generate EVC\nonly after your details are validated by your depository.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>After this, go to the profile settings and enter\nthe required details such as your mobile number, email address, and depository\nname is NSDL, CDSL. Also, enter the mobile number and email id, which is linked\nto your bank account.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After the pre-validation process is over, EVC is\ngenerated after the details are validated by your depository.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Now, enter the EVC on your registered mobile\nnumber to successfully verify your ITR.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Generating_E-Verification_through_Bank_ATM\"><\/span>Generating E-Verification through Bank ATM<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>You can also verify your <\/em>Income Tax Return (ITR)<em> filing via your Bank ATM. The income tax department offers the facility to generate code through selected bank ATMs. This facility is available for selected banks only.<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>The steps involved in this verification are as follows:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>You need to visit your Bank\u2019s ATM and swipe your\nATM card there to generate the EVC.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After this, click on the \u201cPIN\u201d for the income\ntax filing. An EVC is sent to the registered mobile number, which is valid for\n72 hours.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then go to the option e-verify returns\u201d and\nselect the ITR to verify it.&nbsp; Select the\noption \u201cAlready generate EVC through bank ATM.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After entering the EVC, your income tax return\nis verified.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sending_the_signed_ITR-V_Acknowledgement_Receipt\"><\/span>Sending the signed ITR-V\/ Acknowledgement Receipt<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>This is one of the physical means by which you can verify your ITR\nfiling in case you are unable to verify by the electronic methods. You need to\nsend a signed copy of the ITR-V (Acknowledgement receipt) to the department.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Fill the ITR-V form and sign it with the blue\nink. You have to send it either via speed post or ordinary post.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No supporting documentation is required.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The intimation is sent on your mobile phone and\nemail id once the Tax department receives the ITR. And hence your ITR filing gets\nverified physically.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conclusion\"><\/span>Conclusion <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>ITR verification is the process of validating the uploaded Income Tax Return (ITR). If you do not verify your ITR, the ITR will be null and void. &nbsp;You will not receive Income Tax Refund unless you verify the ITR. Thus if you delay the verification, processing of refund will also be delayed. In that case, you will have to file a belated return along with late filing penalties. Thus, you must verify your ITR within <strong>120 days<\/strong> of filing.
