The primary functions and role of Legal\nMetrology are as follows. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>Protect consumers from unfair traders and\n     trade practices.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide regulation according to international\n     standards for controlling measurements and measuring instruments. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The role of legal metrology department is to      grant and renew licenses of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/corpbiz.io\/legal-metrology-manufacturer-license\">legal metrology manufacturers<\/a><\/strong>, repairers, and dealers of      weights and measures.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The controlling Authority does the\n     verification and stamping of weighing and measuring instruments and\n     collection of verification fees.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The officials of the legal metrology\n     department conduct surprise raids and inspections to eliminate illegal and\n     non-standard weights and measures in the market.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The legal metrology department is the legal\n     Authority to implement <strong>the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011<\/strong>,\n     which require all packaged commodities and containers to have declarations\n     stating the composition of net weight, volume, length, maximum retail\n     price, and manufacture or packaging date on the packs of the product.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Every year, all users of weights, measures,\n     and measuring tools must be certified by the controlling Authority. All\n     manufacturers, repairers, and dealers of weight and measures licenses are\n     to be renewed annually.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The wholesale package also mentions the total\n     number of the net quantity in terms of standard units of weights, measures\n     or a number of the commodity.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Role_of_Legal_Metrology_in_Regulating_Packaged_Commodities_Weights_and_Measures\"><\/span>Role of Legal Metrology in\nRegulating Packaged Commodities&#8217; Weights and Measures<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Section 19 of the Act specifies that only an individual has the Authority to import any weight or measure if the importer or owner is registered with the concerned Authority and holds a valid <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/corpbiz.io\/lmpc-importer-license\">LMPC Certification<\/a><\/strong>. The following are the role of legal metrology which deal with the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/corpbiz.io\/model-approval-certificate-for-weights-and-measures\">weights and measurements<\/a><\/strong> in packaged commodities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Checking Of the Net Quantity of\nCommodities in Packages<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The\nController or any Legal Metrology Officer authorized under the Act to determine\nand check the net quantity of a packaged commodity shall be provided by the\nconcerned Government with adequate equipment to carry out his work to determine\nthe degree of accuracy practically and efficiently.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Before\ndetermining the net quantity in any package, the Controller or Legal Metrology\nOfficer shall ensure that the operational standards and other equipment\nfunction correctly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Every\nmanufacturer, importer, packer or wholesale dealer must render such assistance\nto the Controller or any Legal Metrology officer to carry out his duties\nefficiently.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any weights and measurements owned by the manufacturer,\nimporter, packer or wholesale dealer are used by any Legal Metrology officer to\nverify the net quantity contained in any package. The authorized person will\nrelease such weight and measure once his work is completed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Instructions about the\nDetermination of Quantity and Error at the Manufacturer&#8217;s or Packer&#8217;s Premises<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The\nempty tare shall be taken and determined to determine the weight of package\ncommodities. Suppose the tare package of the concerned product weight is equal\nto or less than 3\/10 of the maximum permissible weight for the concerned\ncommodity. In that case, it can be used to determine the net quantity of\nindividual packages.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To\ncheck the Net weight, in the absence of any empty tare packages, one sample\npackage shall be opened, and the net weight, the tare weight of the package\nshall be determined to check whether the importer or manufacturer followed the\nstandards of the legal metrology act.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To\ncross-check the length of the commodity, the package can be opened if it is\nimpossible to measure the package without opening and shall be measured through a calibrated steel\ntape of suitable length.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The authorized Authority reads the actual net volume of the\ncommodity in every package and shall be noted carefully for verification.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The role of <strong>legal metrology<\/strong> is to obtain the controller or any Legal Metrology officer to document the results of these examinations of gross weight, net weight and tare weight of the commodity in the Form specified in the Eleventh Schedule of the Act along with any other observation as he may wish to make a note. These observations were then verified for granting the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/corpbiz.io\/legal-metrology-act-registration\">Legal Metrology certificate<\/a><\/strong> or renewal or during the inspection to determine the standards of weights and measures followed by the manufacturers or importers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conclusion\"><\/span>Conclusion<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The role of Legal metrology in regulating weights and measures for packaged commodities is an important task that needs to be verified before the approval of the LMPC certificate.
