The point is that an important number of corporations engaged in window dressing &amp; the further concealment of debt that the company or entity had previously held to raise more funds &amp; attract investors indeed resulted in catastrophe. These events eventually led to the requirement for establishing a system like the <a href=\"https:\/\/corpbiz.io\/legal-entity-identifier\"><strong>Legal Entity Identifier<\/strong><\/a> system. It connects to key reference details about a party, enabling unique and clear identification of legal entities participating in financial transactions. All LEI contains information on an entity&#8217;s ownership structure and thus answers the questions of &#8216;who is who &amp; &#8216;who owns whom&#8217;, thereby bringing greater clarity to worldwide transactions. This publicly available Legal Entity Identifier data pool can be considered a global directory of participants in the financial market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Legal_Entity_Identifier_Renewal_Mandatory_LEI_Direction_by_the_RBI\"><\/span>Legal Entity Identifier\nRenewal: Mandatory LEI Direction by the RBI<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the year\n2017, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), utilising its powers under Section 35 of\nthe Banking Regulation Act, advised banks to mandatorily ask their large\nborrowers having fund exposures upwards of Rs.5 crores-Rs.50 crores to get an\nLEI. It is also said that banks should encourage large borrowers to obtain LEI\nfor their parent entity, subsidiaries &amp; associates. Thus, Legal Entity\nIdentifier has been implemented in a phased manner for participants in the\nover-the-counter markets for rupees interest rate derivatives, foreign currency\nderivatives &amp; credit derivatives in India. In a notification released in 2018,\nthe central bank of the Country, the RBI, has made it mandatory for each market\nparticipant, other than individuals, to get an LEI. Thus, any legal entity like\na corporate form of partnership, business, or association of persons dealing in\nfinancial transactions would have to get an LEI number. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Legal_Entity_Identifier_Renewal_Applicability_for_LEI_code\"><\/span>Legal Entity Identifier\nRenewal: Applicability for LEI code<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The following are entities eligible to apply for Legal Entity Identifier Code are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Sole Proprietorships<\/li><li>Limited Liability Partnerships<\/li><li>Trusts<\/li><li>Partnership Firms<\/li><li>Public Limited Companies<\/li><li>Private Limited Companies<\/li><li>Government Companies<\/li><li>Insurance Companies<\/li><li>One person Company<\/li><li>Housing Finance Companies<\/li><li>Non-profit companies<\/li><li>Non-Banking Finance Companies<\/li><li>Mutual Funds-sub Scheme<\/li><li>Special Purpose Vehicles-trust, SPV-Partnership\nFirms, Special Purpose Vehicles-Companies, Co-operative Societies or Multistate\nCo-operative Societies Mutual Fund.<\/li><li>Pension Fund<\/li><li>Pension Fund Sub-Scheme<\/li><li>Alternative Investment Fund (AIF), AIF-Sub\nScheme, Scheduled Urban Cooperative Bank, Nationalised Banks, RRBs, Banking\nCompanies-Others, Payment Banks, Stand Alone Primary Dealers, Unlimited\nCompanies, Public Financial Institutions, Cooperative Societies or Multistate\nCooperative Societies, Government Organizations, Companies Limited through\nGuarantee, Superannuation\/Provident\/Insurance\/Gratuity Fund etc.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Legal_Entity_Identifier_Renewal_How_to_Obtain_an_LEI\"><\/span>Legal Entity Identifier Renewal:\nHow to Obtain an LEI?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Legal Entity Identifier Code be obtained by following the steps mentioned below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 1: Document List:<\/strong> Log in on the\nonline portal and access the &#8220;downloads&#8221; tab. The checklist for the\ndocuments &amp; their specific formats essential for submission is available\nhere based on the entity&#8217;s legal structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 2: Self-registration on the online\nportal:<\/strong> A person needs to be appointed as the authorised person to look\nover &amp; carry out the procedure of obtaining the LEI Code. A person may be\nappointed as an authorised person through a power of attorney, resolution or\nvoluntarily, as the case may be. Only this authorised user has permission to\ncreate an account, providing his official email id &amp; proceeding to fill up\nthe online form. Authorised persons include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Name &amp; email id of the authorised officials\nnamed in the online form.<\/li><li>A primary user who submits the online\napplication form (authorised User).<\/li><li>Secondary User- name &amp; email id of the\nsecondary authorised officials named in the form.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 3:<\/strong> The LEI registration form\nconsists of 5 pages, including the payment gateway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Company\nDetails Page:<\/strong> All the company&#8217;s basic information is entered on this\nparticular page.<\/li><li><strong>Ultimate\nParent Page:<\/strong> Where the companies are step-down subsidiaries and the\nparent&#8217;s information, the ultimate parent&#8217;s information is also to be provided.<\/li><li><strong>Holding\nCompany Page:<\/strong> Information about the parent company will be filed here.<\/li><li><strong>Payment\nPage:<\/strong> The payment for the form is to be made once it is complete.<\/li><li><strong>Upload\nPage:<\/strong> The essential documents are uploaded on this page. After the form is\nfilled, the payment page offers the option to either make the payment online or\nselect the option of a demand draft. In case any of the online payment options\nare chosen, following which the &#8220;Submit &amp; Save&#8221; option is\nselected, after the payment is received through the LEIL (Legal Entity\nIdentifier India Limited, a reference number, an email is also sent, informing\nthe list documents to be submitted to the LEIL. In case the demand draft option\nis selected, the reference number &amp; email are generated immediately.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 4: Submission of the Documents:<\/strong> The applicant entity will have to upload the vital documents given in the email. If the upload is unsuccessful, the documents may be couriered to the following address: LEIL (the clearing corporation of India ltd.) CCIL Bhavan, S.k. Bole Road, Dadar west Mumbai-400028.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 5: Verification Procedure: <\/strong>After\nthe documents are uploaded, they will be verified through the LEIL and the\napplication form. If essential, the LEIL may ask for additional documents as\nwell. The application form is online through the LEIL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 6: Issue of LEI Code: <\/strong>The LEI code\nwill be issued on the successful submission &amp; verification of the form\n&amp; the related documents. The Legal Entity Identifier code will be sent in\nan email to the entity, and this code needs to be provided to the banks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Process_of_Legal_Entity_Identifier_Renewal\"><\/span>Process of Legal Entity\nIdentifier Renewal<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The typical\nduration of an LEI Code is one year. The code needs to be renewed through an\napplication form to keep using it. The difference is that you should choose\n&#8220;Modify and Renewal&#8221; rather than &#8220;Register&#8221; on the same\ninternet page where you usually find this information. Again, the authorised\nindividual is required to make any modifications to this section. When the LEI\nCode is typed into the form, all the information is immediately filled in. Any\nnecessary changes must be made. The &#8220;Legal Entity Identifier Renewal&#8221;\ncheckbox must be correctly selected before continuing with the standard form\nfilling, payment, and document submission procedure. All those mentioned above\nmust be submitted successfully for the LEI Code to be renewed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conclusion\"><\/span>Conclusion<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The LEI is issued through the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation established under the Financial Stability Board in 2014.
