According to a survey, India is one\nof the leading Vegan Foods Market in the whole Asia Pacific Region.\nFurthermore, the food industries of our country are introducing a range of\nhigh-quality vegan products with various flavours to appeal to a broader\nconsumer\/customer base and support their market growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (<a class=\"text-primary\" href=\"https:\/\/corpbiz.io\/fssai-license\"><strong>FSSAI<\/strong><\/a>) has published a notification on 10th June 2022, related to Vegan Foods. It is published under sub-section (1) of Section 92 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. This Regulation is published with effect to the notification of FSSAI dated 6th September 2021, inviting objections and suggestions from the public, especially from those who are likely to be affected before the expiry of sixty days from 8th September 2021, i.e., the day on which the copies of such notification was made available to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The objections and suggestions received from people\nwith respect to that notification and the same were considered by the Food\nSafety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). So, with prior approval of the\nCentral Government, FSSAI made this Regulation related to Vegan Foods. However,\nthe Regulation will come into effect from the date of its publication in the\nOfficial Gazette.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Vegan_Foods_definition_under_FSSAI_Regulation_on_Vegan_Foods\"><\/span>Vegan Foods definition under FSSAI Regulation on\nVegan Foods<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This Regulation on Vegan Foods has given an\nexclusive as well as an inclusive definition of the term \u201cVegan Foods\u201d under\nRegulation 2(1). So, as per the definition given here, Vegan Foods means food\nor food ingredient including additives, flavourings, carriers and enzymes or\nprocessing aids that are no animal products and in which, not at any stage of\nproduction and processing, ingredients including additives, flavourings,\ncarriers and enzymes or processing aids of animal origins are used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"General_requirements_under_FSSAI_Regulation_on_Vegan_Foods\"><\/span>General requirements under FSSAI Regulation on\nVegan Foods<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The general requirements are provided under this\nRegulation on Vegan Foods in Regulation 3. These general requirements are\ncovered under eight sub-regulations, and they are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>No person should manufacture, pack, sell, offer for sale, market,      distribute or import any food as vegan food unless they comply with      requirements given under these Regulations.<\/li><li>Food products called Vegan should not involve animal testing for      any purpose, including safety evaluation, unless provided by any      Regulatory Authority.<\/li><li>Every packaging material of vegan foods should comply with      provisions of packaging regulations.<\/li><li>Food Business Operator must ensure that all stages of production,      processing and distribution should be designed to take appropriate      precautions in conformity with Good Manufacturing Practices in a way to avoid the unintended presence of a non-vegan substance.<\/li><li>If the same production line is shared with non-vegan food products      or ingredients, then thorough cleaning or comparable measures in      conformity with Good Practices should be carried out before the production  of vegan products commences, and the same should be extended to all associated machinery, equipment, utensils and surfaces.<\/li><li>Food Business Operators should take appropriate precautions in      conformity with Good Manufacturing Practices before vegan products are prepared, produced or packaged.<\/li><li>Traceability should be established at the manufacturer level, and      Food Business Operator should comply with any other requirements specified by the Food Authority to maintain the vegan integrity of food and its ingredients or products from time to time.<\/li><li>Vegan foods or their ingredients should comply with relevant      provisions as per the Act, Rules and Regulations.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Labelling_and_Display_under_FSSAI_Regulation_on_Vegan_Foods\"><\/span>Labelling and Display under FSSAI Regulation on\nVegan Foods<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Labelling and display requirements are provided\nunder the Vegan Foods Regulation of FASSAI. The seller of such food exclusively\nor as part of retail merchandise should store and display the vegan food in\nsuch a manner that it should be distinguishable from non-vegan food. Every\nvegan food package after the approval should carry a logo as specified in the\nRegulation, and in addition, all-vegan food should comply with packaging and\nlabelling requirements specified under Food Safety Standards (Labelling and\nDisplay) Regulations, 2020. However, there are some exceptions as clause (b) of\nsub-regulation (4) of regulation 5 of the Food Safety Standards (Labelling and\nDisplay) Regulations, 2020.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Vegan_Food_Compliance_under_FSSAI_Regulation_on_Vegan_Foods\"><\/span>Vegan Food Compliance under FSSAI Regulation on\nVegan Foods<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A Food Business Operator should submit an\napplication to the concerned licensing Authority with all necessary\ninformation\/details in a format prescribed by Food Authority. The Food\nAuthority may also specify some guidelines for approval of the vegan logo. No\nvegan food product should be imported without a certificate issued by\nrecognised authorities of the exporting countries in a format as specified by\nthe accepting authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conclusion\"><\/span>Conclusion<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FSSAI Regulation<\/strong><sup><a class=\"text-primary\" href=\"https:\/\/fssai.gov.in\/cms\/food-safety-and-standards-regulations.php\"><strong>[1]<\/strong><\/a><\/sup> on Vegan Food was published on 10th June 2022 under Section 92(1) of the Food Safety and Standard Act, 2006. It has mentioned the meaning of Vegan foods, including the general requirements for the manufacturer of such food products. This Regulation is applicable for all kinds of businesses of Vegan Food, its ingredients and products, from manufacture, packaging, sell to import. The Regulation also talks about the requirements that everyone who is in the business of vegan food is required to follow, such as no involvement in animal testing, compliance with relevant provisions, etc. The Regulation also gives Labelling and display requirements where it states that every package of Vegan Food should carry a logo as specified by it and also that every package should display the vegan food in a way that it should be distinguished from non-vegan food. There should be a Food Authority for issuing any necessary license and guidelines for approval of the vegan logo.
