The Legal Metrology Department of\nIndia assists in providing protection for the safety of the Public,\nEnvironment, Consumers, and Traders. Whereas the unit\nof the amount for the reference of \u201cLength\u201d is provided with a specific\nstructure by the progression of measurement squares for addressing required\nqualities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For maintenance of uniformity, accuracy and proper\ngovernance of such purposes, the Legal Metrology Department was established in\nIndia by the Ministry of Earth Sciences and the Government of India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Legal_Metrology_Department_Functions_for_the_Economy\"><\/span>Legal Metrology Department Functions for the Economy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The following are the functions of the Legal Metrology\nDepartment in accordance with the economy of India \u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Reduction of Disputes along with Reduction of Transaction\nCosts \u2013<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>By regulation for the avoidance of inadequate\nmeasurement practices, which implies a fair expenditure of money for the\nconsumers and saves time being consumed by both the vendor and the consumer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Providing Support to Trade Business \u2013<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Having control over any biased or unfair\nadvantage in commencement of any trade business, ensuring that only fair trade\nis being practised that benefits the vendors purchasing goods to sell, the\nsellers, and the consumer of the product.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Management over Control of Stock and Reduction\nin Fraudulent Activities \u2013<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Measurements that are traceable and provide a\nbasic framework for Stock Control are deemed reliable by the consumers, reduce\ncommencement of any fraudulent activities along with increasing efficiency in\nthe management of the Stock Control System.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Providing Assistance in the Collection of\nRequired Governmental Revenue \u2013<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Legal Metrology Department assists in the\ncollection of revenue and in exercising applicable taxes for the respective\nmeasurement. Such taxes can be applicable on the quantity of products sold,\nimported or exported in the market, on bulk commodities such as rice, natural\ngas, gold, timber, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduction in Technical Barriers for Trade Business<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Legal Metrology practised in India is\nregulated according to internationally set norms that provide clarity and confidence\nto the trade business owners. This ensures in development of the economy,\nnationally and internationally and encourages participation in global trading.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Promotion of good governance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This department regulates various rea of laws\nsuch as Environmental Laws, Occupational Health and Safety Laws, Traffic\nControl Laws, Air Traffic Control Laws, etc., which encourages in promotion of\ngood and reliable governance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Legal_Metrology_Department_Functions_for_the_Society\"><\/span>Legal Metrology Department Functions for the Society<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The below mentioned are the functions of the Legal Metrology\nDepartment in accordance with the citizens of India \u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Assistance in Improvement of Health Conditions \u2013<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Legal Metrology Department helps maintain\nthe calibration of accurate medical devices and pharmaceutical products which\nassists in the correct diagnosis needed for the required medical treatment.\nAlso helps in the calibration of chemical and biological testing conducted for\nfood products.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Protection of the Environment \u2013<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This department assists in the monitoring\nof the maintenance of the environment by controlling and reducing damages\ncaused in relation to the ecological risk factors. The decisions made in\nrelation to the ecological risk factors may include factors such as control\nover the resources of the fishery, noise control of industrial production, air\ncrafts, etc., testing conducted for water pollution, air pollution, soil\npollution, metals, pesticides, etc., identification of percentage of hazardous\nfactors for the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Regulation over safety requirements \u2013<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This department assists in maintenance over the\nsafety regulation for traffic control resulting in the reduction of accidents,\ndeath and injuries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conclusion\"><\/span>Conclusion<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Legal Metrology Department is an established body that assists in maintaining precautions for consumers from unethical vendors, sellers or traders in accordance with the enforced Legal Metrology Act, 2009 and Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011.
