This\nis due to the unavailability of debate that was supposed to happen recently but\ncanceled due to the soaring Covid-19 cases. In addition to that, activists are\nalso seeking Food authority to make the draft text available in regional\nlanguages to gain more feedback. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Draft regulation on Gm foods was introduced by <a href=\"https:\/\/corpbiz.io\/fssai-license\"><strong>FSSAI<\/strong><\/a> on Nov 15, 2021. The same come under the <strong>FSS, Act, 2006<\/strong><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/fssai.gov.in\/cms\/food-safety-and-standards-act-2006.php\"><strong>[1]<\/strong><\/a><\/sup> are applicable to Genetically Modified Organisms, Living Modified Organisms (&#8220;<strong>LMOs), <\/strong>Genetically Engineered Organisms (&#8220;<strong>GEOs<\/strong>&#8220;), which are aimed to be utilized in the food articles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Genetically_Modified_or_Engineered_Food_and_Genetically_Modified_Organism\"><\/span>Genetically Modified or Engineered Food and Genetically Modified Organism<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The term &#8220;Genetically Modified or\nEngineered Food&#8221; cited under draft regulation refers to food &amp; related\ningredients which are composed of genetically modified organisms obtained via\nbiotechnology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whereas the expression &#8220;Genetically\nModified Organisms&#8221; and &#8220;Living Modified Organisms&#8221; denotes any\nliving organism that has a novel combination of genetic items obtained via the\nutilization of advanced biotechnology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_government_is_favoring_Draft_regulations_for_GM_foods\"><\/span>Why government is favoring Draft regulations for GM foods? <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>It\nhas been witnessed that the implementation of GM foods has been prevalent in\nthe agriculture regime across various jurisdictions wherein such biotechnology\nis being utilized in the preparation of modified crops. <\/li><li>According\nto scientific studies, these crops have better yield, improved resiliency to\ncombat diseases, increased tolerance among pesticides and herbicides.<\/li><li>The\ndraft regulations seek to control and govern the production &amp; consumption\nof genetically modified organisms and LMOs across the nation. It specifies that\nno individual shall trade, import, produce, store, or distribute any food\narticle or food ingredient derived from GMOs without FSSAI&#8217;s consent. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The draft regulations also enclose the\nprocess for securing the concerning approvals and set out the directions for\nestablishing the food lab for testing GMO food. The draft regulations mandate\nthat all food articles having an individual GEO ingredient of 1 percent or more\nshall be labeled with the following expression;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Contains GMO\/Ingredients derived from GMO<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conclusion\"><\/span>Conclusion <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bt cotton is the only approved crop in\nIndia, and its cultivation is permitted pan India. Bt brinjal has already been approved by the authority for mass\ncultivation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it is still facing nationwide resistance from farmers and coalition. The release of the draft regulations for GM foods has been subjected to numerous debates among the public. Most environmentalists are strictly against the consumption of GM foods and demanding FSSAI to amend the draft accordingly to limit its availability across India. The Draft Regulation on GM foods incentivizes the cultivation of transgenic food that supposedly boosts the agri production.
