FSSAI\nis an apex institution entrusted with responsibilities to improve food safety\nand standards across the country by deploying relevant measures.  The institution often introduces and amends\nprovisions keeping continual improvement in mind as their core objective. The\nFSSAI also regulates the manufacturing and labelling of alcoholic beverages in\nIndia. Keeping public health and safety in mind, in 2019, the FSSAI came up\nwith an important declaration that mandates the liquor producers to affix the statutory\nwarning on alcoholic beverages. The announcement also entailed the buffer time\nwhich helped these producers to sell out the existing stock with the old\nlabelling.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. The labels present on the alcoholic beverages must reflect the exact amount\nof alcohol content in term of per cent alcohol by volume (.abv).<\/li>
  2. The label may express the approx number of standard drinks in the\npackage.
    \nAccording to the Food Safety\nand Standards (Alcoholic Beverages) Regulations, 2018, the term \u201cStandard\nDrink\u201d refers to the amount of beverage that has 12.7 ml of alcohol by volume as measure at 20 c.\n<\/li>
  3. The inclusion of geographical indicators is a must on the label for the\nalcoholic beverages originating from a geographical location. <\/li>
  4. Alcoholic beverages cannot manifest any state nutritional information or\na health claim on the label. <\/li>
  5. The producers cannot affix the word like \u2018non-intoxicating or other\nidentical words on the label of alcoholic beverages having more than 0.5% abv. <\/li>
  6. The labels affixed on the wine produce must reflect geographical\nindication, type of grapes used and the category of preservatives or additives that\nexist in the final product. <\/li>
  7. Liquor category other than wine that posses less than 10% of alcohol\nmust declare the \u201cexpiration date\u201d or \u201cUse By\u201d date.  Such information should be displayed in the format\nof date, month and year. The producers are free to use the expression like \u201cBest\nbefore\u201d as supplementary information. <\/li>
  8. The Wine produce should reflect expressions like \u201cContains Sulphur\nDioxide\u201d or \u201cContains Sulfite\u201d if it contains 10 mg of Sulphur Dioxide per\nlitre. <\/li>
  9. If the residue is originated from an animal such as egg white then the\nsame must find its way to the label in the form of a non-vegetarian logo.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
