The FSSAI has circulated various controlling measures and warnings, which are to be taken into contemplation while the food items are imported in India. If by any chance the imported food items are not abiding by the FSSAI guidelines, the consignments shall be dismissed and its entry won\u2019t be permitted into India. This regulation has various guidelines which focus\non safety guidelines and few of them are given below:-<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Risk Based Framework<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Under section 11 of Chapter VII of Food\nSafety and Standards (Import) Regulations, 2017, the Food Authority is authorised to review the\nrisk associated for the safety of imported food articles and to adopt a scheme\nfor risk-based framework and inspection process for the purpose of clearance of\nimported articles of food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FSSAI shall\nprofile the Importer, the imported product, custom house agent, manufacturer,\norigin country, source country, and port of entry to assess the risk associated\nwith the food commodity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Food Authority\nmay recognize few laboratories to test the food samples in the exporting\ncountries to ensure the safety of imported goods before the foods are imported\ninto India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Food Alert Notifications<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Food Authority\nmay issue food alert notifications which shall include time bound prohibition\non articles of food based on the risk associated with the food articles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The food alert notification shall remain in force until the food authority is satisfied that the risk is no longer prevailing and the control measures for safety of imported food has been taken to prevent the continuation of risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-left\"><b>Read our article<\/b>:<mark style=\"background: #fffd03 !important;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/corpbiz.io\/learning\/fssai-guidelines-on-the-clearance-of-imported-food-in-india\/\">FSSAI Guidelines on the Clearance of Imported Food in India<\/a><\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Orders for\nProhibiting and Restricting on Food Import<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Under section 12 of\nChapter VIII, the Food Authority has got the power to issue orders for\nprohibiting and restricting on Imports of Article of Food based on risk\nperception or any outbreak of disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Food authority\nis authorised to issue advisory guidelines from time to time as according to the demand of\nthe situation for ensuring the safety of imported food and wholesomeness of\nfood articles imported into India and he shall inform about such prohibitions\nand restrictions to the customs immediately. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cancel Import License<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\nis obligatory for the Food Importer to whom direction is issued to comply with\nthe provision of the regulation and to abide by the order or direction as given\nby the Food Authority. Otherwise, the Food Authority has the discretion to cancel\nthe import license issued to the Food Importer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where\nin a situation the Food Importer fails to act in accordance with the direction\nor order of the Food Authority then the customs or the port authorities concerned\nin the clearance or rejection of imported food articles in the customs area\nshall be obligated to provide the Food Authority with all such statistics on a\nquarterly basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">No Objection Certificate<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Under section 14 of chapter X, the <em><strong>Authorised Officer<\/strong><\/em><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Authorised_officer\"><em><strong>[1]<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/sup> is the authority to issue a no objection certificate after examining and assessing the safety of imported food under his signature and seal for allowing import of food. Such order shall be communicate to the customs and the Food Importer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The food authority\nshall take such other actions as are required to secure the quality and safety of\nthe imported food articles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Important_Ministries_Involved_in_the_Import_of_Food_Products\"><\/span>Important Ministries Involved in the Import of Food Products<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>The important agencies involved for managing and securing the safety of imported food products are given below:-<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/corpbiz.io\/learning\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Important-Ministries-Involved-in-the-Import-of-Food-Products.png\" alt=\"Import of Food Products\" class=\"wp-image-28190\" width=\"518\" height=\"559\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corpbiz.io\/learning\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Important-Ministries-Involved-in-the-Import-of-Food-Products.png 835w, https:\/\/corpbiz.io\/learning\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Important-Ministries-Involved-in-the-Import-of-Food-Products-278x300.png 278w, https:\/\/corpbiz.io\/learning\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Important-Ministries-Involved-in-the-Import-of-Food-Products-768x830.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 518px) 100vw, 518px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Other_Important_Guidelines_on_Safety_of_Imported_Food\"><\/span>Other Important Guidelines on Safety of\nImported Food<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The provision of Section\n25 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 is related to import of food\narticles in India and the section provides that no person shall be allowed to\nimport into India \u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Any unsafe, wrongly branded, sub-standard\nfood or any food containing extraneous matter,<\/li><li>Where any license is required for\nthe import of any food article under any Act or regulations and the license has\nnot been obtained in accordance with the conditions, and<\/li><li>Any food article is contravening\nany other provision of this Act or of any other rule or regulation made under\nany other Act.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shelf Life of Imported Food<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Shelf life of a\nfood article is the time period between the manufacturing date of such food and\nthe \u201cDate of expiry \u201cor the &#8220;Best Before&#8221; or whichever is earlier as\nhas been printed on the label. It is important to check the shelf life so as to\nensure the safety of the imported food articles and food which at the time of\nimport have a valid shelf life of not less than 60% shall be cleared by\ncustoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Packaging and Labelling Of Imported Food<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The main purpose of\npackaging the food is to ensure the safety of imported food in India and to\nmake sure that the food was stored and transported in optimal storage\nconditions of temperature and hygiene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Food Sampling and Analysis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Authorised\nofficer shall take the food sample for inspection to the food analyst and such\nanalyst shall examine the safety of the imported food and shall intimate back\nto the Authorised officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conclusion\"><\/span>Conclusion <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The FSSAI has set up grievance redressal mechanism and has taken every necessary step to ensure the safety of imported food in India. Therefore, the Food Safety and Standards (Import) Regulations, 2017 provides complete procedure for clearance and safety of imported food products into India.
