{"id":21480,"date":"2020-12-10T12:54:01","date_gmt":"2020-12-10T07:24:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/corpbiz.io\/learning\/?p=21480"},"modified":"2021-01-22T15:46:40","modified_gmt":"2021-01-22T10:16:40","slug":"new-regulation-by-fssai-about-food-for-infant-nutrition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/corpbiz.io\/learning\/new-regulation-by-fssai-about-food-for-infant-nutrition\/","title":{"rendered":"Introduction of New Regulation by FSSAI about Food for Infant Nutrition"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">The FSSAI has\ncome up with the new regulating law which is named as <strong><em>Food Safety and Standards (Food\nfor Infant Nutrition) Regulations, 2019.<\/em><\/strong> This particular Act is\nregarding infant nutrition and health for the babies not above the age of 12\nmonths. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although this Food for Infant Nutrition Regulation existed as part of the <strong>Food Safety &amp; Standards (Food Products Standards &amp; Food Additives) Regulations, 2011<\/strong><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Food_Safety_and_Standards_Authority_of_India\"><strong>[1]<\/strong><\/a><\/sup><strong>.<\/strong> However, now the FSSAI has framed a separate regulation which has been implemented. Now the act has came\ninto force in 2019 with the name <strong><em>Food Safety and Standards (Foods for Infant\nNutrition) Regulations, 2019.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The regulation\nincludes the standards for Infant formula for special medical purpose\nespecially food for infants who are inborn with the (IEM) Errors of Metabolism.\nThe standards have been mentioned in regard to premature infant such as milk\nsubstitutes, Lactose and sucrose free infant milk substitutes which is made\nunder infant formula for the special medical purposes. It includes food\nmade of protein concentrates or protein isolates or by defatted edible oil seed\nextracts as prepared that gets dissolved with water or milk easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Follow-up Formula<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It means the food\nintended for use as a liquid part of the complementary diet for infants when\nprepared as per the instructions for use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Infant Formula for any Special\nMedical Purpose<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It means for a\nhuman milk substitute or infant formula which is manufactured specially to meet\nthe special nutritional requirements for infants having any disease, specific\ndisorders, or medical conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Foods for Infant based on the Traditional\nFood Ingredients<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These are the products\nwhich are prepared traditionally at home for feeding infants but have been processed\nand provided in packaged forms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_are_the_General_Requirements_for_Infant_Nutrition_as_per_Guidelines\"><\/span>What are the General Requirements\nfor Infant Nutrition as per Guidelines?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Foods for infant nutrition has\nto be packed in hermetically sealed, clean and sound containers or in flexible\npack made from paper, polymer or metallic film in accordance with the <strong><em>Food\nSafety &amp; Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations, 2011. <\/em><\/strong>It\nmust be packed with inert chemicals in order to protect the contents from\ndeterioration.<\/li><li>The infant formula category for\nany special medical purposes provided under these regulations must be exempted from\nthe provisions specified under the Regulation of the <strong><em>Food Safety &amp; Standards\n(Packaging &amp; Labelling) Regulations, 2011.<\/em><\/strong> Furthermore in case any ingredients\nwith known allergen city are present then there has to be warning mentioned on\nthe label.<\/li><li>The infant formula category\nfood for infant based on traditional food ingredients provided under these\nregulations has been conform to the microbiological standards for milk &amp;\nmilk products of category infant formula as given under Appendix B of the <strong><em>Food\nSafety &amp; Standards (Food Products Standards &amp; Food Additives)\nRegulations, 2011<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li><li>The variation of \u00b1 5.0% of the\ndeclared values of an added ingredient due to analytical variations must be allowed.<\/li><li>The food for infant nutrition\nwill use the source compounds for vitamins, minerals and other nutrients from\nSchedule I (a), Schedule I (b) &amp; Schedule I (c), provided under the\nregulations.<\/li><li>The food for infant nutrition\nmust contain algal and fungal oil as source of Arachidonic Acid (ARA) and\nDocosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) from Mortierella alpina, Crypthecodinium cohnii, Schizochytrium\nsp., and Ulkeniasp at the level of maximum 0.5 %. The DHA of total fatty acids\n&amp; ratio of DHA: ARA as 1:1 minimum. The DHA content must not be less than 0.2%\nof total fatty acids, if a claim related to addition of DHA is made. The Infant\nMilk substitutes for premature infants must not contain less than 0.2 %. DHA of\ntotal fatty acids &amp; ratio of DHA: ARA as 1:1 minimum.<\/li><li>The person shall not\nmanufacture, store, sell or exhibit for sale, an infant milk food, milk cereal\nbased complementary food, and processed cereal based complementary food with\nfollow up formula except under <strong><em>Bureau of Indian Standard Certification Mark<\/em><\/strong>.\nThe infant formula category for special medical purpose provided under these\nregulations must be exempted.<\/li><li>Food for infant nutrition must\ncomply with the requirements of the Feeding Bottles, Infant Milk Substitutes,\nand Infant <strong><em>Foods (Regulation of Production, Supply &amp; Distribution) Act, 1992\nwhich was amended in 2003<\/em><\/strong>. In case of infant formula for any special\nmedical purpose when breastfeeding is contraindicated on medical grounds for\nthe disorders, diseases, or medical conditions for which the product is\nintended, the labelling provision &#8220;<strong><em>Mother&#8217;s Milk Is Best For the Baby<\/em><\/strong>&#8221;\nwill not be required.<\/li><li>Food for infant nutrition has\nto comply with all the requirements of <strong><em>Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules,\n2011 <\/em><\/strong>only except for the requirement of standard pack size in\naccordance with second schedule in case of infant formula for any special\nmedical purpose.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conclusion\"><\/span>Conclusion<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/corpbiz.io\/fssai-license\"><strong>FSSAI registration<\/strong><\/a> is a very important to obtain and even the small deviation from rules and regulations can cause rejection of the food product and wasting all the efforts of the manufacturer.
